our history

The Segal name has been a distinguished one in New York City’s electrical contracting industry since the 1920’s.

Philip Segal joined Local Union #3, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) in 1923. He remained an active member until his retirement in the mid 1960's. His son Bernard, after working as an electrician in Local 25, IBEW on Long Island, opened The Five Star Electric Company in 1959. The company incorporated in 1971, and Five Star Electric Corporation was born.

Five Star provided electrical contracting services to a few public agencies in the greater New York area. In 1980, with seven electricians, Five Star Electric Corporation became signatory with Local Union #3, IBEW in New York City.

Gary Segal, Bernard’s son, joined the firm in 1981, starting his career as an Apprentice Electrician and then moving through the ranks to Journeyman, Estimator and Project Manager. However, in 1991 tragedy struck with Bernard’s untimely death. Then in 1993, Gary's Mom, Rita, who managed the office, also passed away. Suddenly, Gary found himself alone at the helm of Five Star Electric.

Gary decided to continue in Five Star’s special niche to build and renovate New York City public schools. In 1990 when the New York City School Construction Authority market exploded, Gary concentrated on this work and expanded Five Star's capacity. Five Star became one of the most prominent school electrical contractors in New York.

It was also during this time that Gary decided to diversify the company's growth into other market sectors, a decision on which Gary has never looked back. Five Star started working for other public agencies as well as for private owners, developers and contractors.

Since 1991, Five Star has grown from a 35-employee shop to the over 1000-employee organization it is today. The firm has developed a professional team – both in the field and in the office – which is second to none. And the company’s signature statement says it all —
